I want to wish you and your family all the best during this Christmas season.
Trina and I are grateful for the outpouring of support and friendship we’ve received from so many here in Orange County.
After all, it’s been quite a year.
As you know, in March, I was elected in a special election to finish the term of the State Senate’s open 37th District. We won over 50% of the vote, despite the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent against our campaign by the public employee union bosses.
And, after serving the last 8 months in Sacramento, I can see why the public employee unions wanted to keep me out.
They didn’t want someone trained as a Certified Public Accountant to examine the state budget and to point out the looming unfunded pension liabilities, including the $140 billion (yes, billion) CalPERS and CalSTRS retirement shortfall.
The Caltrans engineers’ union was not happy when we pointed out the recent audit showing Caltrans to be overstaffed by 3,500 extra engineers. That’s costing us half a billion dollars a year!
And, the Governor wasn’t happy when we led the opposition that defeated the proposed gas tax hikes. Our argument was simple: why give Caltrans more money when they can’t even spend efficiently the funds we already give them?
Now, as we enter into 2016, I have to run again to fill the Senate seat’s new four-year term. And, I’ve been told the public employee unions are going to pull out all of the stops to try and defeat me.
That’s where I need your help. With the year coming to a close, we have to show a strong fundraising effort to ward off potential opponents. We have to raise another $18,000 between now and the end of the year to meet our goal.
Can you help us with a year-end contribution to our 2016 Senate campaign?
Donations we receive now – in this year – are essential to sending a message that our supporters are ready for battle, and that our campaign is strong.
Ultimately, a strong finance report at year’s end will hopefully dissuade serious competition from entering the race.
And, I can tell you from first hand experience, we need strong voices in the legislature fighting on behalf of taxpayers and families.
That’s what I did as Orange County’s Treasurer-Tax Collector, where my team pulled the county out of bankruptcy and reformed how the County invests taxpayer dollars. And, as a County Supervisor, I helped bring greater transparency to public employee union pension negotiations, and I led the effort to reform retiree medical benefits, saving taxpayers nearly $100 million a year.
I’m certain we can begin to turn things around in Sacramento, too. But, I need your help to ward off any well-funded opponents. Your year-end contribution will send a strong message that helps keep our race from attracting a substantive opponent.
Can you invest $25, $50, or $100 into our fight? If you are so inclined, the contribution limit for individuals is $4,200 for an individual, and $8,400 for a couple. CLICK HERE or visit the link below to contribute online.
Thank you for taking the time to consider this important request.
Very truly yours,
California State Senator, 37th District.
